Audiophile Heaven on a Sunday in Denver (RMAF)
I spent time on Sunday listening to the 3 or 4 rooms that I had singled out from Saturday’s recon. I wanted to hear four speakers, but only got good time in the sweet spot and under good conditions for two of the four.

The omnidirectional MBL speakers, which use a unique pulsating quasi-spherical array of ribbons, make a strong argument for the benefits of this design approach. Featured in their room when I visited was the new 111F (24900 euro/pair), which uses the "Radialstrahler" drivers for the treble and upper midrange, with conventional drive-units used for the lower frequencies.

Another long-time personal favorite, MBL was showing a revised version of its 111s, the MBL 111F (“F” for fifth generation), driven, of course, by MBL’s superb electronics.

In room 2007, MBL was showing its latest omni, the 111F, driven by the usual panoply of ultra-expensive, ultra-good MBL electronics.

Also in the running, as it always is, is MBL’s omnidirectional 101 E Mk II, which was terrific—as it always is. Three-D, boxless, beautiful in tone color, dynamic as all get-out, the 101s simply disappear like nothing else — and sound like nothing else.

Okay, so those of you (both of you) who have been waiting for CES 2010 pics are in for a bit of a disappointment. I really didn't take very many pictures and for some reason (probably because I've attended the show so many years in a row now) the fire to really capture the experience on CMOS just wasn't there. But. I did see and hear some great stuff so maybe a pic or two over the next couple days.

God, how I love mbl's demos. Their rooms at RMAF have been major highpoints of the last two shows for me, and their exhibit at CES 2010 is just as fine. There was an incredible warmth and inner glow to the midrange, a tremendous presence and clarity to the sound of cymbals, just the right weight to an electric bass, and a wonderful transparency throughout the range that made me want to stay forever.
Learn moreAsynchronous USB
Asynchronous USB is commonly referred to as the best type of USB interface implementation. Until recently consumers have only had a few options for async USB components. There were a handful of new asynchronous USB interfaces on display at CES this year. Some of them I was unable to verify as truly asynchronous. Instead of cast doubt on the product or the manufacturer or publish incorrect details I will wait for further information before commenting. Two interfaces I was very impressed with come from Mbl and Resolution Audio.
